The GamificationLab is a research laboratory within the Department of Computer Science at Sapienza University of Rome dedicated to the study of human–computer interaction, games and gamification, and digital simulations. Founded in 2018, the lab conducts cutting-edge research in the fields of implicit interaction, AI-based proactive interfaces, AI-supported user interface design, AI-supported interaction, and the use of inertial sensors for geolocation. The methodologies and research results are applied in various domains, including seismic early warning, smart parking, indoor navigation, and digital platforms supporting administrative and bureaucratic processes.
The GamificationLab currently (2025/26) includes about ten researchers, including postdocs, PhD students, and fellows in Computer Science, engaged in projects exploring how artificial intelligence and Large Language Models (LLMs) can support and transform digital interaction and gamification processes. They are joined by numerous undergraduate interns and master’s thesis students, contributing to a dynamic, interdisciplinary, and highly collaborative work environment.
The lab is directed by Emanuele Panizzi, its scientific director and founder, whose work focuses on context-aware interaction on mobile devices, Human–Computer Interaction, gamification, and application design。In recent years, the GamificationLab has involved over 150 participants, including researchers and students, and continues to grow: positions for research assistants and scholarships for master’s students are periodically available。The lab’s activities have been supported by funding from the Fondazione Roma, the Ministry of Education, Universities, and Research (MUR) as part of the Departments of Excellence Project 2015–2022, as well as by funded projects to which the lab has contributed.
